Lactobacillus is a genus of bacteria best known for its role in fermentation, and in cosmetics it usually appears as a ferment, lysate, or filtrate rather than as live bacteria. In skincare, these probiotic-inspired ingredients are used to help support the look of a balanced, comfortable complexion. They’re often included for their soothing, conditioning, and skin-conditioning properties, and may help products feel more gentle on skin that’s easily stressed or looks dull.

For skin, Lactobacillus-derived ingredients are commonly found in moisturizers, serums, and masks aimed at supporting the skin barrier and improving the appearance of hydration and smoothness. For hair, they can show up in scalp or conditioning products where they may help leave hair feeling softer and the scalp feeling more comfortable.
