Maggiori dettagli

Hydroxypropyl Guar is a vegetable polymer based on guar gum. In cosmetics, it works as a thickener, emulsion stabilizer, film-forming agent, antistatic agent and textural agent. It is especially useful in shampoos, conditioners, masks, creams, gels and lotions, where it improves the consistency, distribution and feeling of softness. The ingredient is considered safe for normal cosmetic use, and its irritating potential is usually assessed as low.

Hydroxypropyl Guar is a modified polysaccharide of plant origin, a derivative of guar gum, which is obtained from the seeds of the Cyamopsis tetragonoloba plant. In cosmetics, it is used as a functional polymer: it helps to regulate viscosity, stabilize emulsions, improve the texture of the product and create a thin smoothing film on the skin or hair. The CosIng database for Hydroxypropyl Guar contains the following functions: antistatic, binding, emulsion stabilizing, film forming, surfactant-cleansing and viscosity controlling. By its nature, Hydroxypropyl Guar belongs to the group of galactomannans, high—molecular-weight plant polysaccharides. Unlike ordinary guar gum, it is chemically modified with hydroxypropyl groups, which improves its solubility, stability, and technological behavior in cosmetic formulas. Such an ingredient is more often used not as an “asset” in the classical sense, but as a structure-forming and sensory component that affects the consistency, distribution of the product and sensations after application. Hydroxypropyl Guar can perform several tasks simultaneously in hair formulas. It helps reduce static electricity, makes hair smoother to the touch, facilitates the distribution of shampoo, conditioner or mask, and can enhance the feeling of softness. Due to its film-forming properties, the ingredient is able to leave a thin polymer layer on the surface of the hair, which visually and tactilely makes the hair smoother, more manageable and less fluffy. However, it is not a silicone component and is usually used in small concentrations. Hydroxypropyl Guar is used primarily as a thickener, stabilizer and textural agent in skin products. It helps to create denser gel, cream or milky textures, improves the sliding of the product on the skin and can give a feeling of softness without pronounced greasiness. Manufacturers of raw materials also describe it as a component that increases viscosity, improves “smooth skin feel”, has film-forming properties and is able to stabilize emulsions.   Technologically, Hydroxypropyl Guar is valuable because it works well in water systems and can be used in shampoos, shower gels, conditioners, masks, creams, lotions, gels and styling products. Some suppliers indicate that it can be used in formulas that must remain sufficiently fluid for a pump or spray, and typical input levels can be in the range of about 0.1–1.5%, although the specific dosage depends on the type of raw material and the purpose of the formula.   It is important to distinguish Hydroxypropyl Guar from Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride. Both ingredients are related to guar gum, but Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride is a cationic conditioning polymer that is more often used specifically for pronounced hair conditioning. Hydroxypropyl Guar is usually more neutral in profile and is more often perceived as a thickener, stabilizer, film-forming agent and sensor modifier. In terms of safety, Hydroxypropyl Guar is considered a well-studied cosmetic ingredient. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review considered Hydroxypropyl Guar as part of the galactomannan group; in a published safety assessment, this group of ingredients was found to be safe under existing application practices and concentrations in cosmetics. Due to their high molecular weight, such polysaccharides tend to have a low probability of significant penetration through the skin, so their systemic effect is not considered a major problem with conventional cosmetic applications.   The irritating potential of Hydroxypropyl Guar is generally considered low, especially when used in standard cosmetic concentrations. However, like any polymer thickener or component of plant origin, it can cause individual intolerance in individual users, especially with sensitive skin or a damaged skin barrier. In formulas for eyes, scalp, or children's cosmetics, the final tolerance depends not only on Hydroxypropyl Guar itself, but also on the entire composition.: Surfactants, preservatives, perfumes, pH and concentrations of other components. In the composition of INCI Hydroxypropyl Guar is usually closer to the middle or the end of the list, as it is used in small quantities. Its presence in the formula often indicates not a “therapeutic” effect, but rather that the manufacturer sought to improve the viscosity, stability, application, glide, softness and overall sensory perception of the product.
