Polyquaternium-11

Polyquaternium-11 is a synthetic, water-soluble conditioning polymer used mostly in hair and some skin products. It belongs to the “polyquaternium” family, which means it carries a positive charge that helps it cling to negatively charged surfaces like hair strands and skin. In formulas, it’s valued for adding slip, softness, and a lightweight film that can improve feel and manageability without the heaviness of some oils or waxes.

For hair, Polyquaternium-11 can help reduce static, tame flyaways, improve combability, and make styles feel smoother and more controlled. It’s especially useful in leave-ins, styling products, mousses, and conditioners for people who want a soft, flexible finish rather than a stiff hold. On skin, it may contribute a silky, cushioned texture in lotions or cleansers. It’s generally a good fit for fine, frizz-prone, or easily tangled hair.

Caveat: because it forms a film, some people with very fine hair or those who use many layering products may notice buildup over time. If that happens, a clarifying wash can help.
