Coco-Betaine is a mild amphoteric surfactant of coconut origin. It cleanses the skin and hair, strengthens the foam, makes the cleansing formula softer and more comfortable, and helps reduce static electricity in the hair. It is most commonly found in shampoos, shower gels, foams, liquid soaps, and mild cleansers. It is usually well tolerated, but with sensitive skin or an aggressive general formula, it can cause irritation.

Más detalles

Coco-Betaine is a mild amphoteric surfactant, that is, a surfactant that helps to cleanse the skin and hair, form foam and soften the effect of harder cleansing ingredients. It is obtained from the fatty acids coconut oil and betaine. In cosmetics, Coco-Betaine is most often used in shampoos, shower gels, face washes, liquid soaps, baby and mild cleansers.

The main functions of Coco-Betaine in cosmetic formulas are cleansing, foam enhancement, antistatic effect and improvement of the softness of the formula. The European CosIng database for Coco-Betaine contains the following functions: antisstatic, cleansing, surfactant — foam boosting and hair conditioning.

In cleaning products, Coco-Betaine is often used not as the only surfactant, but as a co-surfactant component that complements the main washing system. For example, it can be combined with Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Coco-Sulfate, Decyl Glucoside, Coco-Glucoside and other surfactants. In this combination, Coco-Betaine helps to make the foam more dense and creamy, improves the distribution of the product and reduces the feeling of dryness after rinsing.

Coco-Betaine is useful for hair because it cleanses the scalp and hair, helps the product to foam better and can reduce static electricity. It is not a full-fledged conditioning asset of the level of cationic polymers or conditioning emulsifiers, but it is able to make shampoo softer in feeling and less “squeaky”.

Coco-Betaine is valuable for the skin as a relatively mild cleansing component. It helps to remove impurities, sebum and makeup residues, but is usually perceived milder than classic strong anionic surfactants. Therefore, it is often used in formulas for daily cleansing, sensitive skin, intimate hygiene, baby products and products where good tolerance is important.

It is important not to confuse Coco-Betaine and Cocamidopropyl Betaine. They are similar in purpose and both belong to mild amphoteric surfactants, but they are different INCI ingredients with different chemical structures. In real formulas, they can perform similar tasks: improve lather, soften cleansing, and increase comfort during use.

From the point of view of safety, Coco-Betaine is considered an acceptable cosmetic ingredient at normal concentrations and a well-developed formula. The CIR considered Coco-Betaine in the alkyl betaines group and recognized these ingredients as safe under existing application practices if the product is formulated in such a way as not to cause irritation.

Coco-Betaine's irritating potential is usually lower than that of more aggressive cleansing surfactants, but this does not mean that the ingredient is completely neutral. In high concentrations, with frequent use, contact with eyes or damaged skin, it can cause dryness, tingling or irritation. The final softness of the product depends not only on Coco-Betaine, but also on the entire formula: other surfactants, pH, preservatives, fragrance and the presence of emollient components.
