Description
Laureth-4 is a synthetic ingredient from the ethoxylated alcohol family, used mainly as a surfactant and solubilizer in skincare and haircare. In simple terms, it helps oil and water mix, which makes formulas more stable and can improve how cleansers, shampoos, and some treatment products spread and rinse. It may also help dissolve fragrance oils or other ingredients that would otherwise separate.
For skin and hair, Laureth-4 is valued more for what it does to the formula than for a direct “treatment” effect. It can support a smoother texture, better cleansing, and more even application, especially in products designed to remove excess oil, makeup, or buildup. People who use rinse-off products, lightweight lotions, or formulas with hard-to-blend ingredients may benefit from it.
Caveat: like many surfactants, Laureth-4 can feel drying or irritating for some people, especially in higher concentrations or on very sensitive skin. It’s generally best appreciated in well-formulated products, and those with easily irritated skin may prefer gentler cleansing systems.
