PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil

PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil is a castor-oil-derived ingredient that’s been modified with polyethylene glycol (PEG) to make it much more water-friendly. In formulas, it usually appears as a white to off-white waxy or lard-like material. Its main job is to act as a solubilizer and emulsifying helper, meaning it helps oil-based ingredients like fragrances, essential oils, and some plant extracts blend evenly into water-based products such as toners, mists, cleansers, and shampoos.

For skin and hair, it doesn’t work like an active treatment ingredient, but it can make a product feel more elegant and consistent. By keeping oils and fragrance dispersed, it helps prevent separation, cloudiness, or oily droplets in the formula. People who enjoy lightly scented watery products, or who use cleansing and rinse-off formulas that need a stable mix of oil and water ingredients, may benefit from it.

Caveats: because it’s a solubilizer rather than a moisturizer or treatment ingredient, it won’t directly hydrate or repair skin or hair.
