polybutene is the polymer formed by the polymerization of a mixture of iso- and normal butenes.

Description

Polybutene is a synthetic, syrupy polymer used in cosmetics as a texture enhancer and film-former. It’s especially common in lip glosses, balms, and some skincare and hair products because it gives formulas a smooth, cushiony glide and a glossy finish. On skin, it helps reduce the feeling of dryness by forming a light, flexible layer that slows moisture loss. In hair products, it can add slip, shine, and a softer feel without the heaviness of some oils.

People with dry lips or hair that feels rough, frizzy, or dull often appreciate polybutene because it improves comfort and shine right away. It also helps products stay in place longer, which is useful in long-wear makeup and lip formulas. That said, it’s not a hydrator on its own, so it works best when paired with ingredients like humectants or emollients. Some very acne-prone users may prefer to patch test richer formulas, since the overall product matters more than polybutene alone.
