Description
Hydrolyzed Keratin is keratin that has been broken down into smaller pieces so it can be used more easily in cosmetic formulas. Keratin is a structural protein naturally found in hair, skin, and nails, and in skincare and haircare it’s usually sourced from wool, feathers, or other animal-derived materials. Because it’s hydrolyzed, it can spread more evenly through products and help condition the surface of hair or skin.
In haircare, hydrolyzed keratin is best known for making strands feel smoother, softer, and more manageable. It can help reduce the look of frizz, improve slip, and temporarily support damaged or chemically treated hair by coating weak areas and helping hair feel stronger. In skincare, it’s less common but may be used for its conditioning and moisture-binding feel, especially in products meant to soften rough or dry skin.
Who benefits most? People with dry, brittle, color-treated, heat-styled, or frizz-prone hair often notice the biggest difference. A caveat: because it’s protein-based, some hair types can feel stiff or overloaded if used too often, especially when paired with lots of other protein ingredients. It’s also worth noting that hydrolyzed keratin is usually animal-derived, so it may not fit vegan preferences.
