Description
Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate is a sugar alcohol–based ingredient made by processing starch, usually from corn or wheat, into a mixture of humectants and skin-conditioning agents. In skincare and haircare, it mainly acts as a moisture binder: it helps attract and hold water so formulas feel less drying and more comfortable on skin or hair. You’ll often see it in moisturizers, cleansers, masks, lip products, and some hair products where a softer, smoother feel is wanted.
For skin, it can help reduce that tight, stripped sensation after cleansing and support a more hydrated, cushioned feel. In haircare, it may contribute to a smoother texture and less brittle feel by helping formulas retain moisture. People with dry, normal, or combination skin may especially appreciate it, and it’s generally useful in products designed to be gentle and hydrating.
Caveat: Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate is not an active treatment ingredient, so it won’t replace stronger hydrators or barrier-supporting ingredients on its own. In very rich formulas, it may feel a bit tacky to some users, depending on the overall product design. As always, the finished formula matters more than any single ingredient.
