CI 15985 is a synthetic colorant better known as Yellow 6 or Sunset Yellow FCF. In cosmetics, it’s used to give products a bright yellow to orange hue and to help create consistent shades in makeup, cleansers, shampoos, and other personal care formulas. It doesn’t treat skin or hair directly; its main job is aesthetic, helping products look appealing and uniform.
People who enjoy colorful makeup or vividly tinted hair and body products may encounter CI 15985 often, especially in lip products, blushes, bath products, and some shampoos. Because it’s a dye rather than an active skincare ingredient, it won’t add hydration, smoothing, or repair benefits on its own. Its value is mostly in appearance and product identity.
Caveat: as with many color additives, some people with very sensitive skin may prefer to patch test or choose fragrance- and dye-free formulas if they notice irritation.
